Have you ever wondered companies launch new products every now and then even though they already have a killer one which shoots their sales to the roof? Innovation is a must especially in the cutthroat business industry. Whatever size or stage your business is in, you need to be ready to revolutionize the way you run it and more often than not, revolutionizing it means repackaging your products and services.

Innovation is the catalyst to growth. Relying on best practices without having the foresight to bring about development may mean stagnation and this is unacceptable if you are looking to operate your business in the long term. The market changes every so often and not keeping track of significant changes that might influence your business sales would cost your customers attention.

If you think about it, big companies offer new, improved products and service all the time in order to attract more customers as well as to retain their current ones. Small businesses would do well to follow their path. Innovation is being competitive and a reactive approach just wouldn’t cut it. Brainstorming amongst executives is one way to ensure that ideas are forthcoming but most often than not, your employees have ideas that are out-of-the-box. Consider getting everyone involved in the innovation process.

Apart from products and services, you might also need to update your leadership practices. There are many strategic decisions you as a small business owner need to do and it all adds fuel to the company’s growth. Analyze what needs to be changed because let’s face it, there would always be something that we need to change. It might be the daily operations and even the tools we use for better business management. Whatever it is, the important thing is that we adapt to the changes and grow despite of it.

The Chinese people are rapidly being known worldwide because of their relatively cheap labor prices. Apart from that however, the Chinese are well-known in the business industry for the qualities inherent to them which makes them good business leaders one can emulate. I remember when I was quite young, my mother had (and still has) a lot of Chinese business people who comes over for coffee or dinner. As a child, I never quite got how adults could enjoy a good meal while talking about business but now that I got older, I could relate better to that scenario. So what qualities does Chinese business people have which sets them apart from the rest of us?

The first one is that they show resilience amidst adversity. We are all aware of how the quality of goods are when it’s made in China. If you haven’t experienced it on your own, surely you have read the news about Chinese-made products. Yet, despite the bad publicity regarding the quality of their goods, most entrepreneurial ventures still arise.

The second quality I find very commendable about Chinese business people is that they believe that there is no better time to start a business than today. Procrastination is definitely not what they believe in and in my opinion, procrastinating can be one of the causes of failures in any business.

While it is good and monetarily beneficial to be absorbed in running your business, you would need to know which are most important in your life. For the Chinese, it’s always been about family and it’s a very endearing quality. It might be true that Chinese parents are slowly gearing their children to take on roles in their companies or their businesses but it also shows that they are fiercely loyal to their respective families and that is one proof that money and business just comes in second.

Have you ever read a blog post or a tweet that contains more grammatical and spelling errors than a 5thgrader’s creative writing article? If you have a blog, don’t you just automatically delete comments which don’t make sense at all? I mean, yes, what they’re saying may have a point but it looks to be so poorly translated that it gives you a migraine just reading it.

If you are working on an email marketing campaign, a blog and even in putting content on your site, you have to be careful with your spelling and grammar. Put yourself in your site visitor’s shoes. Would you think that a certain website is credible if you spot a mistake or two (or worse, more)? If you’re anything like me, you wouldn’t and you’d dismiss that site as nothing short of a poor attempt at business.

The message that an author/editor/contributor would like to convey to their target audience is one that could be riddled by controversy and more often than not, opinions and facts. The quality of the message is most important which is why most writers I know (including myself) go to great lengths to ensure that our articles are free of grammatical, spelling and punctuation errors that may eventually cause more controversy than the topic itself.

The process of writing a significant post may take hours and proofreading it is an important step that you shouldn’t miss out on. Apart from the obvious, you might also be writing off topic and proofreading would most definitely get you back on track. They say that content is king and that’s an irrefutable fact. Since that is the case, what you write about isn’t just a diary for personal consumption, it’s to relay your opinion on things and topics that you think your readers care about. It is for these reasons that you should write a concise and well-written article. Otherwise, your site would just be one of those which would languish in obscurity.

It’s great that amidst the social media hype, there are still social networking activities which do not only focus on a business’ online reputation. Local businesses have as much chance to meet with like-minded people in their community in a face-to-face setting. Don’t get me wrong, social networking sites are a great help since it has a larger scope but it is equally important that small business owners get more involved in personal commitment within their own community by being physically present in both general and exclusive events.

Attending any social event isn’t just a meet and greet affair. It is a chance to bolster your presence in the industry as well as maintain your business relationships. You have to stand out. You’re not just the face on a business card. You have to make yourself memorable enough so that people around you would be familiar with who you are and what you do.

First impressions may not always last but it sure feels like it so you have to ensure that from the get-go, people do not have any false perceptions of who you are and what you represent. Have you ever attended networking events? In a room full of people, the challenge is not only to stand out and be recognized. It’s also about recognizing how much of an asset you and your business are to the community.

Let’s be honest, not everyone we meet in any networking event is going to be a customer. But they could be great referrers and referrals are vital to any business.

Networking isn’t a one-off deal. It’s about being consistent and timely. The contacts you have gathered from social networking events aren’t just a bunch of business cards, they’re not just a group of people that you hope and wish and pray would come knocking at your door any moment. Creating relationships are fairly easy, that’s what social networking is about but maintaining and cultivating that relationship is what effective social networking is all about.

Brush up on your communication skills because just standing in one corner, nodding your head at people who barely know you isn’t networking, it’s just hanging out at a networking event. You have to engage and socialize. Be active in group discussions and be confident.

Social networking is about giving and receiving. It’s a marketing strategy for people to know how you and your business are beneficial to each one of them so that you would also benefit from them. It’s supposed to be a busy, two-way street that business people need to cross in order to gain success.

Maintaining a good relationship with customers is vital to business. This is one aspect that small businesses can take directly to the bank. So how exactly can a small business owner ensure customer loyalty? One doesn’t need to have a degree in psychology to analyze what your customers want. It’s as basic as putting yourself in their shoes. We have all been customers. We patronize specific foodchains, stores and yes, even websites. Something about a certain retailer earns our loyalty that we keep coming back.

It is not just about the product, it is how you offer it. If you’re living in a far-off town and you’re the only one which offers a certain product, customers would flock to your door because can provide them with what they want and what they need. But sooner or later, you would have a competitor. Somebody else could fill that need and the question you should ask is: where would that leave you if the product alone is the reason why your customers stay? It is what I call, false loyalty or customer loyalty that’s based on the product or service that’s not available anywhere else.

Service with a smile always works. How many times have you walked into a store and walked right out after you’ve seen a clerk who you saw frowning? Would you still buy from that retailer knowing that their employees are not happy with what they’re doing? We operate on that assumption even though we understand that there might be some mitigating factors at play why we aren’t welcomed warmly and courteously.

Business owners doesn’t need to bend over backwards just to please a certain customer. The fact is, it’s the effort that counts. Say a certain customer has a complaint against a product, service or even an employee. He or she might be frustrated, irked to no end or probably even combative, depending on their mood that day. If what the customer is asking isn’t really feasible, just make sure that you empathize with them and offer them an alternative solution, a compromise that would work for the company and for the customer.

Any relationship is based on trust so you have to ensure that your business’ reputation isn’t going to be tainted with issues that you could have prevented in the first place. Anyone who has been a customer in some business establishment wants to feel that they are valued and appreciated. Earning their trust and keeping it makes for a great recipe to a customer-centric business.

It is not easy to run a business. Neither is it easy to keep. But with a great following of patrons, it is most likely that you don’t have to file for bankruptcy. You also have to remember that word of mouth is a very powerful marketing strategy. Take care of your customers and they will take care of you.

Business is an economic system in which goods and services are exchanged for money (usually, unless otherwise stated) on the basis of their perceived worth. Every business requires some form of investment and an increasing number of customers to whom its output can be sold at profit on a consistent basis. But in the quest to increase your profits, are you sure that there are no laws that you go against?

I have a friend who operates an online site for models. He has been running the gig for a few years and his constant problem was that most of the members on his site share the copyrighted materials to other people. He tries to do a DMCA report but everyday, new content keeps cropping up. Of course, with a DMCA notice, the webmaster has no choice but to remove the copyrighted material that has been reported. And it is fine and dandy for pictures and all other materials that have been stamped with the words “copyright” but for blogs and other intellectual properties, what can we do to protect our own content/s?

Copyright infringement when it comes to writing is someone who passes off your work as their own. I also had an experience where one of my articles was published in another blog site and instead of being flattered (as someone suggested), I got angry. Why? Because a different name showed up as the author. I spend my day reading and researching on topics that would hold the interest of my readers. After that, I make a draft and very meticulously check for any errors that I might have made. You can say that I am a stickler for details. I would go over the draft a hundred times over before I publish it. That’s how much I care about the articles I write. Because I care about the people who would read it. It is a sad waste of talent and of intellect then when one passes off a blog or a write-up as their own.

We all have different writing styles and sometimes, I stray from it just to have some pizzazz. I wonder then why people steal even just a basic blog, a simple article. Is it a lack of talent? Or is it because it’s easier to do than come up with your own idea? Blogging has reached new heights. It has become a phenomenon which rocks even the small business owners’ world. And as it sweetens the pot for us writers, the bitterness grows because of incidents like when someone copies your whole article and you, the writer who has been up all night drumming your fingers and racking your brains on what to write about, just cannot do anything except to just grin and bear it. Have you ever had a similar experience? Feel free to share it in the comments.

Mothers who manage their own businesses (mompreneurs, as we like to call them) are in a league all their own. It is simply amazing how women can juggle taking care of their family and running a business. In research conducted by Regus, data shows that some companies are hesitant to hire working moms. This is probably one of the driving forces that lead mompreneurs to start their own business!

Entrepreneurship allows working mothers the flexible lifestyle they need to juggle work and life. Here are some guiding tips to help mompreneurs stay focused and grow their business.

Finding the Right Balance
Women have always been good at multi-tasking. Trying to stay connected with your family while putting in the hours at the office can take a toll on anyone. What if I told you that it is possible to have a maintain good work-life balance without jeopardizing your career or your relationships? Every couple of months, work out a schedule with your partner and split up responsibilities. It is difficult to be away from the kids during the day but try spending at least 20 mins alone with each of your children and just talk about their day. If possible, try not to spend too much time in the office after hours.

Playing with the Guys
Some industries or companies today are still dominated by men at the top. Momtrepeneurs have the great advantage of being their own boss and no longer have to be wary of the glass ceiling!

Connect with other women!
It is very likely there are other women in your community that have been there or are also trying to create a successful business while juggling family responsibilities. The good news is that there are mentors who will gladly help you out. Connect with like-minded individuals and you will surely find invaluable advice and resources. Many counties have local programs like Back2Work with U program in Singapore or the 10,000 women program in Philippines that provide training and mentorship for women entering or re-entering the workforce.

It is possible to have your cake and eat it too. Mompreneurs have as much a chance as anybody to succeed. Hundreds of thousands of working mothers who have already taken the plunge and started their thriving businesses.

However, a call to action is needed because entrepreneurs need to do better to be better. It’s not enough that you have a steady following, the reason that networking sites and events are increasing in number is that there’s never enough networking to do.

It goes without saying that the wider your network is, the higher likelihood of your business to be successful. Entrepreneurs need to be in constant motion, perfecting their skills. Supposing you have already started to build your network, that’s no excuse to rest on your laurels. The world is a big place and conquering it means you need to step out of your doorway and start networking if you haven’t already. Now, what you need to do is to brush up on your networking skills to get you and your business known.

Here are some tips:

Be open to making new friends and acquaintances.

Learn how to communicate with other people.

Help others. You would be surprised how helping other people could get you a long way. You have to prove that you are invaluable. Otherwise, people would just pass up the chance to meet with you and talk to you.

Always do a follow up. For example, if you had asked for help, be sure to thank your network whether their input is helpful or not, it is always good form to say thanks.

If you are attending networking meetings, don’t be late and don’t leave early. Grab this opportunity to be heard and to listen.

Build relationships. Business contacts are never just business contacts. It is a connection, one that needs careful attention and follow through.

Polishing and constantly checking up on your networking skills is a good (not to mention cheap) investment. It is a social world we live in and we all need to step up our game to be a success.

Succeeding in business cannot be left to chance. The approaches and tactics you come up with to improve your enterprise is all because of a strategy that you’ve already thought of which you think would help in running your company. Without a sound strategy, your small business would join the growing statistics of doomed businesses.

Strategy is critical to any business because it would give you a perspective on where you want your business to be and how it would get there. Too often, small business owners are too wrapped up in managing their businesses that creating a strategy for long-term and short-term success is delayed or worse, not done at all. Running a business is a lot like playing chess. You need to set up goals and long-term plans for future play. Sometimes you need to sacrifice a pawn or two to ensure the king’s safety while checking all the possible moves of the opponent so that you would not be surprised by an impending “check mate”. In business, “check mate” is when you close down your business. In order for you to avoid this, you have to evaluate your company. You don’t have to be big to win big but what you need to do is to think big.

Carefully plan your moves. If you encounter some difficulty (maybe in financing or production), you need to see it as an opportunity for growth and move on. What should set you apart is your drive and your passion to do better and be better business owners. Investing your time and effort into strategizing for your business gives you the ticket to success but like everything else, you wouldn’t get anywhere if you wouldn’t use that ticket to get you where you want to be.

Marketing your brand is not just about having people tell others how great it is. It’s not just about paying for expensive ads or getting models and celebrities to talk about you. It’s about social engagement.

Reaching out to other entrepreneurs and customers and making yourself (and your brand) heard through blogging is a marketing concept that’s taking the web by storm. People now are quick to judge whether an email or a post is spam or not judging by the content. If the post or the email you get is a sales pitch, chances are you delete it right away. So what’s wrong with a sales pitch? Nothing except that people are rarely sold out on your idea. Why? For the simple reason that they don’t know you.

Nowadays, before you can entice people to even look at your site, they’d have to be really curious. One of the ways to pique their curiosity is through blogging. And I’m not talking about a sales pitch that you call a blog. I’m talking about content that’s going to help others. You have to fill a need, answer a question, give opinion about the latest trends. It’s marketing with a twist. People would get to know you more by the reputation you build. It’s a slow process but then, all things which lasts usually takes time. You would just need to be patient, do some research on the topics relevant to businesses today, write clearly (and watch your grammar), rinse and repeat.
